Half of Drogheda descended on the Wolf den on Sunday night for the local derby of the year. Drogheda Wolves welcomed newly formed Boyne Warriors to the Den for their Senior double header.

First out was the Senior Women, a packed out gym saw familiar faces step out now as opponents but the home comforts worked all in the Wolves favour.

Katherine McQuillan opened up the scoring for the Wolves and then Siobhan Byrne, Molly Dawson and Amelia Lawrence all got involved to see Wolves lead 16-0. There was just two mins to go in the first when Warriors found the basket but trailed 19-8 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter both sides introduced new players as a full bench allowed the teams to keep the court fresh and the intensity high. Wolves took the advantage and ploughed on through to half-time sitting comfortably 36-17 in front.

However, there was no room for complacency and the game isn’t over until the buzzer sounds. Foul trouble saw Tina Cluskey out of the game but Jess Richardson, who has played a stormer all season for the Seniors, filled in the gaps nicely. Some nice shots from Dawson and Byrne meant the wolves started the final 10 mins leading 50-30.

The Warriors exhausted every avenue trying to get back into the game but it was too late. Wolves introduced Emma Fanning who got her name on the scoresheet on her first play and so did Michelle Montana. The game finished with the Wolves protecting home court 61-45.
